For Chanel’s couture fall 2016 show, Karl Lagerfeld honors the seamstresses of his atelier. Karl transformed the Grand Palais into a Chanel couture atelier with cutting tables, fabrics and sewing machines, showing off the craftsmanship and the human engagement that makes it all happen. Karl said that despite huge advances in technology such as laser cutting and enhanced embroidery, much of the design work “is still made in the way it was made a hundred years ago.” The collection spanned suiting, cocktail frocks, and fantastical evening wear. There was a strong, clean shoulder line created by the genius artisans of the ateliers. Front row was seated by Chanel’s latest campaign star Willow Smith with her father Will Smith.
